Religion
Jesus Christ is at the center of all that we do because we are people created, redeemed, and sanctified by God. Through the proclamation of the Gospel, the Holy Spirit creates and strengthens a living faith in God’s people. His Word provides the direction for our lives here on earth and prepares us for an eternity with Him in Heaven.
From a Christ-Centered Perspective, Students Will:
1. Know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior
2. Give witness to their faith
3. Lead God-pleasing lives in service to Him and others
4. See themselves as forgiven sinners who in turn forgive others
5. Respond to God’s love through their stewardship of time, talents, and treasures
6. Develop a life-long commitment to worship
7. Develop a life of personal prayer, devotional time, and Bible study
8. Acknowledge that God’s Word is the foundation of our faith
9. Trace the history of God’s people from creation to present
10. Understand and apply Lutheran Doctrine
Language Arts
The ability to communicate is one of God’s greatest gifts. Language Arts builds on this gift by providing the skills necessary for life-long success in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing. Students reach a higher level of thinking as they share their own thoughts and learn from those expressed by others.
From a Christ-Centered Perspective, Students Will:
1. Use the general skills and strategies of the writing process, enhancing writing with stylistic and figurative language
2. Incorporate grammatical and mechanical conventions in written compositions
3. Gather and effectively apply information for research purposes
4. Use the general skills and strategies of the reading process
5. Apply reading skills and strategies to understand and interpret a variety of literary and informational texts
6. Implement listening and speaking techniques in a variety of contexts
7. Analyze and interpret visual media, utilizing effective skills and strategies
8. Understand and apply the characteristics and components of the media
Science
Science is the process of learning about and understanding God’s creation. Students will use their natural curiosity to appreciate and learn about the interactions of our world and the proper relations between people and nature. Students will develop problem-solving skills through critical thought and analysis using the scientific method. Students will be able to analyze and communicate modern developments from a Christian perspective and therefore be better prepared to enter our increasingly technical world.
From a Christ-Centered Perspective, Students Will:
1. Recognize that the universe is the product of a caring, loving God
2. Recognize that changes in the universe are part of God's order of creation
3. Demonstrate appreciation and thanks for God's gifts by being good stewards of His creation
4. Identify and apply the physical laws of nature
5. Develop independent scientific investigations to solve scientific questions
6. Develop scientific skills through the proper use of apparatus and technology
7. Read and discuss scientific issues from a Christian perspective
8. Understand that their bodies are gifts from the Lord and learn how to care for these gifts
9. Be able to describe connections between science and future careers
10. Be able to correctly use and understand scientific terms, and/or concepts
11. Be able to describe historical connections in science and future contributions of scientists
Social Studies
Social Studies is the interaction between God, His people and His created world. Students will use these interactions to explore the disciplines of history, geography, economics, government, psychology, and sociology. Using these disciplines, students will make connections to the past, the present, and the future acknowledging their role.
From a Christ-Centered Perspective, Students Will:
1. Identify basic human needs and see the relationship between cause and effect in human interactions
2. Be able to locate and utilize information from a variety of sources and communicate it effectively
3. Discern fact from opinion to make valid choices as social issues are read and discussed from a Christian perspective
4. Grow in evaluating analytical skills,utilizing inquiry as well as higher order thought
5. Acknowledge that the past affects the present and the future
6. Develop respect for feelings, rights, opinions, and beliefs of divergent groups along with the awareness of cultural bias
7. Acknowledge responsibility as Christian Americans to be informed of our heritage, appreciating and participating in American institutions and our nation's democratic process
8. Compare and contrast different types of government and economic systems
9. Identify physical features, read maps, and discuss the influence of the environment on a culture as global, Christian citizens
Math
God has created an orderly, systematic universe. Mathematics is a useful and unique God-given universal language that facilitates the ability to appreciate the created order God has given us and further advances the understanding of our modern, high-tech world. The development of mathematic abilities prepares students for lives of responsible Christian service to His church and the community.
From a Christ-Centered Perspective, Students Will:
1. Know and understand numbers, how they relate to each other, and be fluent in using math computations correctly and accurately
2. Analyze and find the unknown using patterns, relationships, functions, symbols, and graphs
3. Observe and analyze two and three-dimensional shapes and demonstrate spatial reasoning
4. Understand the measurable attributes of objects and apply the appropriate techniques, tools, and/or formulas to determine measurement
5. Formulate a question and organize theoretical or experiential data to make predictions as to what the outcome will be
6. Apply and adapt a variety of appropriate strategies to solve problems encountered in life
7. Select and use various types of mathematical reasoning and methods of proof
8. Communication, explaining clearly and precisely mathematical processes to peers, teachers, & others
9. Understand how mathematical ideas interconnect and build on one another to produce a complete set of skills
10. Create and use visual aides to organize, record, and communicate ideas to solve problems and interpret data
Spanish
The study of language provides important experiences in exploring the culture, history, folklore, everyday life, and speech of other people. The global society and Christian perspective emphasize the need to cultivate international understanding through effective education. As a result, students are enabled to live more fully a life of Christian citizenship in this changing global society. “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…” Matthew 28:19
From a Christ-Centered Perspective, Students Will:
1. Communicate in written and verbal language other than in English
2. Grow in knowledge, understanding and appreciation of other cultures
3. Connect with and acquire information from other disciplines in relation to the target language/culture
4. Compare the target language/culture to global and learners' native languages/cultures
5. Seek opportunities to demonstrate cultural awareness and apply the target language in school, local, and global communities
Art
Art is the exploration and appreciation of the world created by God the Father. Students will learn to express themselves through sensory methods that communicate thought, appreciate differences, and give praise to God.
From a Christ-Centered Perspective, Students Will:
1. Know and remember information and ideas about the art and design around them and throughout the world
2. Understand the value and significance of the visual arts, media and design in relation to history, citizenship, the environment, and social and Christian development
3. Design and produce quality original images and objects such as paintings, sculptures, designed objects, photographs, graphic designs, videos, and computer images
4. Apply their knowledge of people, places, ideas, and language of art and design to their daily lives
5. Produce quality images and objects that effectively communicate and express ideas using varied media, techniques, and processes
6. Understand the role of and be able to use computers, video, and other technological tools and equipment
7. Interpret visual experiences, such as artwork, designed objects, architecture, movies, television, and multimedia images, using a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas
8. Develop perception, visual discrimination, and media literacy skills to become visually educated people
9. Use their senses and emotions through art and design to develop their minds and to improve social relationships
10. Reflect upon the nature of art and design and the meaning in art and culture
11. Make connections among the arts, other disciplines, other cultures, and the world of work
12. Use their imaginations and creativity to develop multiple solutions to problems, expanding their minds to form ideas for original works of art and design
Music
God has given the unique gift of music as a life-long means for expressing the Christian faith and praising Him. By studying the many facets of music, students learn to express emotions, demonstrate creativity, work cooperatively, discover their own musical abilities, and appreciate the music of others.
From a Christ-Centered Perspective, Students Will:
1. Sing alone and with others a varied repertoire of music
2. Play alone and with others a varied repertoire of music on instruments
3. Improvise music
4. Compose and arrange music
5. Read and notate music
6. Analyze and describe music
7. Evaluate music and music performances
8. Relate music to the other arts and disciplines outside the arts
9. Relate music to history and culture
Physical Education
Through Physical Education, students will appreciate their bodies as marvelous gifts from God, understand their responsibility to maintain an active and healthy lifestyle, and develop fundamental physical, social, and fitness-related skills by participating in individual and cooperative activities.
From a Christ-Centered Perspective, Students Will:
1. Appreciate their talents and abilities as gifts from God
2. Understand respective differences in individuals
3. Demonstrate responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity settings
4. Understand how to monitor and maintain a health-enhancing level of physical fitness for a well-rounded lifestyle
5. Apply concepts and principles of movement to the learning and development of physical skills
6. Use a variety of basic and advanced movement forms
7. Demonstrate competency in many forms of movement and proficiency in some
8. Understand that physical activity provides opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and social interaction
Technology
Technology will help our students serve God and others in this Information Age. Students will be equipped to gather, organize, analyze, assimilate, and communicate information and knowledge responsibly and ethically. Technology can help our students manage the above tasks and use the information in their lives of service to God and the world.
From a Christ-Centered Perspective, Students Will:
1. Communicate through a variety of media
2. Understand basic operations of technology
3. Learn responsible, ethical, and appropriate uses of digital and analog media
4. Integrate technology into lifelong learning experiences
5. Understand basic terminology
6. Understand how technology has changed, has advanced, and will
progress
7. Appreciate technology as a gift from God and use this gift to share God’s Word with others
